The interior of our homes often gets the most attention, from furniture and wall fixings to paint colors. A well-loved home, however, is cared for both inside and outside. Freshening up your home’s exterior enhances curb appeal, increases the value of your home, and impresses your guests. This of course starts with a fresh coat of paint!
Tips for Choosing Exterior Paint Colors:
- Color Scheme - A balanced exterior color scheme has no more than two to three colors. Before looking at samples, consider the color of your roof and your home’s exterior. Do you have siding, brick, stone? Use the colors of your home’s structure and architectural style as a guide for color choice. Make sure you don’t choose a color scheme that will clash with other colors in your home’s structure.
- Lighting - Give careful consideration to the effect of natural light when selecting exterior shades. Abundant sunlight washes out colors, making them appear cooler and lighter than they truly are. We suggest choosing a shade that is two to three times warmer than the color you want.
- Samples - Before you break out the paint rollers, be sure to purchase some samples! Test your colors on a small portion of your exterior and take a good look in the morning, afternoon and evening to see how natural light is affecting the shade.
- Professional Painters - For a job well done, trust your exterior painting job to professionals. A quality painting contractor will prep your exterior with a power wash, work efficiently, and clean up all work areas upon project completion.
Once you paint your home, there are a few other steps you can take to spruce up your exterior and property.
Fences, Decks, and Sheds
There’s no point in sprucing up your home if you leave exterior structures looking shabby. Any fences around your property, decks, or balconies should be refinished and freshly painted or stained. Choose a paint or finish that is weather protecting for longevity. Your family and guests will enjoy your outdoor spaces more when they are comfortable and beautifully maintained. Outdoor entertainment areas also add value to your home if you are interested in selling soon.
Are your outdoor lighting fixtures old and rusting? Update them! Replace outdated fixtures with more modern ones or refresh rusty fixtures with a simple coat of paint. Add some flair to your home with a bold pop of color or a sophisticated metallic finish on these fixtures.
Door knockers, shutter handles, and more are small details that can make a big impact. If you’re looking to put your home on the market, it’s often those small details that make the sale. Update old fixtures to match your new color scheme for a home that looks polished.
Who said mailboxes had to be boring? Why not update yours with a fresh coat of paint, unique decor, or something a little bolder? A fun way to decorate your mailbox is with a mini garden. Create a small bed around the base of your mailbox with bricks or stones and plant your favorite flowers. Your home will be the brightest on the block!
